Timber Edge Shapes and Terms
Timber edges are shaped to improve the comfort and appearance of a job.
Tools used to produce these shapes include hand tools like planes, spoke shaves and files, and power tools such as a router.

Arris

The sharp edge on a piece of timber that is formed where two surfaces meet

Bevel

An edge is removed at any angle except 45°.

 

 

Splay

Part of an edge is removed at any angle except 45°.

Chamfer

Part of an edge is removed at 45°.

 

Round

An edge is removed to give a rounded section.

 

Trench

A rectangular recess is removed across the grain.

 

Groove

A rectangular section of timber is removed along the grain.

 

Rebate

A rectangular section of timber is removed on the edge of a piece of timber.
